With Cousins, expert craftsmanship is established in the individual elements that hold a piece of jewellery together —visible only when you know where to look. Exceptional jewellery is not defined by scale or spectacle alone, but by the quiet discipline of detail. Here, I want to impart some of my experience gained through 50 years of service to the jewellery industry, and our own family business.

 

The claws are often regarded as the first test of skill. They should hold the stones securely yet disappear visually, shaped with intent and care, rather than force and determination. Well-made claws feel balanced and purposeful, each one perfectly matching the next without stiffness or uneven tension. They picture-frame the stone, never overpower it in size or weight, allowing light to pass freely while still offering absolute security.

 

True craftsmanship of beautiful jewellery relies on exact proportion; every element must relate harmoniously to the whole, whether it is a ring, pendant, or brooch. A well-proportioned piece feels inevitable, as though no measurement could be adjusted without disturbing its equilibrium. This sense of balance is what allows jewellery to sit naturally on the hand or body and over the many years I have studied jewellery, certain pieces simply feel right.

 

Symmetry is not simply mirror-imaging; it is rhythm and visual calm, pure harmony. In finely made jewellery, both sides of a design communicate with one another. Even in organic forms, there is a controlled consistency that reflects the maker’s discipline and eye. This is hard to teach, but does come naturally to the most superior of craftsmen.

 

Hand engraving brings unique personality into pieces of jewellery. Unlike engraving done by machine, hand engraving carries the minute variation of human touch; giving depth, emotion and warmth. Each mark and stroke reflects time, patience and a steady hand—qualities that cannot be rushed or replicated by a machine.

 

The gallery, or basket beneath a stone, is rarely noticed once a piece is finished, yet it quietly gives away everything about how it has been made, and is where I always look first. At its simplest, there is a central opening—essential for cleaning and for letting light travel through the setting—but in well-crafted jewellery the basket back gallery becomes far more considered than a functional necessity.

 

It is in these hidden places that craftsmanship often speaks most clearly. As the architect Carlo Scarpa once expressed in his approach to making, “beauty is not reserved for what is immediately seen, but is found in the care given to every concealed junction and overlooked detail.” These are the moments where the hand of the maker is most present, even when the eye of the wearer is not.

The details are deliberate and calm, the metal structure resolved rather than merely removed. Light is allowed to move through the stone evenly, returning with life and clarity, while the transitions between metal and space are handled with quiet precision.

I feel it is in this hidden architecture that true excellence often reveals itself.

 

A well-finished and hand-polished stone is precise but never overworked. Facets should meet cleanly and with definition, with life and fire preserved rather than polished away. The finishing of a gem stone should enhance the natural character of the gem, not suppress it, and add attractiveness, personality and warmth to your piece of jewellery. In the stone finishing is where a craftsman’s patience is fully visible.

Exceptional jewellery is rarely defined by its costs, nor even by the rarity of its gemstones. Rather, it is recognized by the countless small decisions made by skilled hands – decisions so carefully judged that they almost disappear. The finest craftsmanship does not seek admiration through extravagance. Instead, it rewards careful observations which reveal intricate considerations. It is this quiet and confident excellence that continues to fascinate us, and why, after more than a century as jewellers, exceptional craftsmanship remains at the very heart of everything we do at Cousins.
